My roommate Dan stopped me today in the hall with the question, “did we talk about going to New York City for Fall break?”
To which I responded, like any sleep deprived grad student, “No, I don’t think so. Why?”
“Because Adam asked me tonight, over beer, if he could come along on our trip this weekend?”
“Huh. I mean, I might have mentioned to someone that we had talked about going at some point, in the indefinite future.”
“Yeah, that’s all I remembered talking about, too. It’s pretty sad that we are in such a small social circle that we have to make up stuff like this to gossip about.”
So, yeah, apparently I’m going to NYC this weekend with friends from the dept.. “Which friends?” you ask. I wish I knew. Moreover, I’m glad I didn’t make plans for this weekend … or something. Seriously, though, I really hope no one I know is planning on taking the bus to the City with Dan and me this weekend, because I’m surely not planning to.
Also, I’d really like to know how this rumor got started. Not for any specifically nefarious reasons, I just want to know who I have to tell in order to make sure that I don’t get a series of angry phone call asking for my whereabouts come Friday evening.

No, it’s cool. I mean, it’s not your fault. Well it sort of is, but only because other people are stupid. So, totally no worries.
